Elizabeth Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch

(b. May 29, 1743, Montagu House, Whitehall, London – d. Nov. 21, 1827, Richmond, London (Surrey) )

Gender: F

Lady Elizabeth Montagu (1743-1827) was born on 29 May 1743 at Montagu House, Whitehall, the daughter of George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (1712-1790) and his wife Mary Montagu. Mary Montagu, (1711-1775) from whom George had gained his title, was descended from the Montagu's of Broughton, a branch of the Montagu family descended from Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Broughton (1562-1644), whilst Elizabeth Robinson Montagu's husband, Edward Montagu (1692-1775) was descended from Sir Sidney Montagu (d.1644), the 1st Baron Montagu's brother, and progenitor of the Earls of Sandwich. This made Elizabeth Robinson Montagu and Lady Elizabeth Montagu distant cousins. In 1767 Lady Elizabeth Montagu married George Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch (1746-1812). Following the marriage she settled at the Buccleuch estate of Dalkeith in Midlothian, Scotland, where she died on 21 November 1827.
